What is the easiest way of cleaning the leaves of indoor plants?

February 16, 2010 - 11:25 am 5 Comments

I have around a dozen indoor plants. The leaves tend to get very dusty. I feel very lazy to clean each and every leaf, what is the best and easy way of cleaning the leaves and bring shine to the leaves? Please reply

I hear ya! I have enough dusting to do without having to dust the plants! What I do is when I notice that one looks a little shabby, I pop it in either the kitchen sink or the bath tub and give it a good gentle shower. I have hand held showers in both bathrooms and I use the sink sprayer. Gently warm water and not too hard on the water pressure. Give them a real good rinsing off and let them sit for a couple hours to drip/dry. They’ll look better and love the extra humidity at a time when most of our homes are too dry anyhow.

Why are the leaves on my sunflowers turning white?

February 14, 2010 - 8:20 am 1 Comment

Not the yellow flowers, but the green leaves attached to the stem. Am I overwatering/ underwatering. They just had little blooms on the stem but the large ‘heads’ haven’t bloomed yet.

Hi,

The white leaves are an indication of a condition of "powdery mildew". It is a fungus condition that occurs on plants when the weather has been damp and the plants have remained wet too often.

I would cut down on the watering and put some fungus treatment, specifically aimed at powdery mildew on your plants.

Be forewarned, you may not be able to save the plants, but at least you know how to treat the problem on future plants.

How can I protect a pine tree in my yard from being infested by beetles?

February 11, 2010 - 5:26 pm 2 Comments

I have a large pine in my back yard (approx. 75 feet tall). It is a beautiful sight, and I don’t want to have to cut it down. However I am concerned about a possible future beetle infestation in the tree. Other pines in my community have died from beetles. What can I do to protect my tree from beetles? Is there some sort of product I can use that will help me? Thanks!!

You can spray the tree with lindane every six months but that is a real problem for a tall pine.

What would happen to planted pine forests if left unattended?

January 31, 2010 - 3:06 am 1 Comment

I live in NE Georgia and am surrounded by mostly Planted Pines. I know that these trees have a pretty short shelf life and usually die if they are not harvested. Hypothetically if no one were here to take care of them Harvest and replant them. In a few hundred years what would you expect to see here? Huge pine forests that have reseeded from these original planted pines or hardwoods that took over after the initial planted pines died out?

plant succession will lead to a climax forest of oak and hickory

What is the procedure for planting gamble oak?

January 31, 2010 - 3:06 am 2 Comments

All I have ever found on the ‘net is stuff about the growth cycle of gamble oak. But how, and when, is the best time to plant gamble oak acorns? I am currently following the natural procedure that I have seen in the Sangre De Cristo mountains, but do I need to crack the acorn before planting, or will a freeze do that naturally when in the ground? I am also afraid of those little worms eating the seed before it can germinate if I crack it before hand. Anyone know anything about Gamble Oak?

Try reading the following article. It refers to all oak trees: forestry.about.com/od/treeplanting/p/oak_acorn.htm I found it under "planting an oak tree."

What flower and tree planting zone does Cambridge, Maryland 21613 fall under?

January 19, 2010 - 6:25 pm 2 Comments

I have ordered some shrubs and trees and want to know what planting zone I live in.

http://www.gardenweb.com/zones/zip.cgi

put your zip in there….

we used to be a 7, but the ‘global warming ‘ has moved us to 7b over the last several years…. you may have moved from 7a to just 7 for that reason as well….however, zones are so ‘moveable’….where I live I can do zone 6 plants cuz I get enuff cold, or zone 8s if I mulch heavily and put them in the right place in the yard, with more sun…. so it’s not something that is carved in stone…. you CAN move out of your zone a little on each side if you have the right condtions… that’s known as using a micro-climate in your yard to stretch the zone suggestions….. more here if you’d like to know more about zones…
